When summer rolls in, we all look forward to sunny drives, road trips, and warm weather. But just like you prepare yourself for the heat, your car needs a little attention too. High temperatures, long drives, and changing conditions can take a toll on your vehicle if it’s not properly maintained.
To help you stay safe and avoid unexpected breakdowns, here’s a quick summer car care checklist from your trusted local mechanic shop:
1. Check Your Cooling System
Your engine works harder in the summer, and a properly functioning cooling system is your first line of defense against overheating.
At Seiler Tire, we do this for you by:
- Checking the coolant level and condition (look for rust or cloudiness).
- Inspecting radiator hoses for cracks or leaks.
- Making sure that your radiator fan is working properly.
If it’s been more than 2 years since your last coolant flush, it might be time to schedule one at Seiler Tire.
2. Test Your Battery
Summer heat can actually drain your battery faster than winter cold. High temperatures accelerate corrosion and evaporation of battery fluid.
When we test your battery at Seiler Tire, we:
- Inspect for corrosion on terminals.
- Make sure it's securely mounted.
- Test battery performance if it’s over 3 years old.
A quick test can prevent a roadside breakdown when you least expect it.
3. Inspect Tires for Wear and Pressure
Tires expand in the heat, and underinflated tires can be dangerous—especially on long highway drives.
- Check tire pressure (including the spare).
- Look for uneven wear, cracks, or punctures.
- Schedule a rotation for your tires if you haven’t in the past 5,000–7,000 miles.
Good tires = better gas mileage, safer handling, and a smoother ride.
4. Air Conditioning & Cabin Filter
No one wants to sit in a hot car with weak A/C. Make sure your air conditioning system is blowing strong and cold.
For that summer heat, Seiler Tire will:
- Check refrigerant levels.
- Inspect A/C belts for wear.
- Replace the cabin air filter if airflow is weak or musty.
Your comfort and air quality both matter—especially during hot summer commutes.
5. Change Your Oil (If Needed)
Hot weather and summer road trips can stress your engine oil. Fresh oil helps your engine run cooler and more efficiently.
- Check oil level and clarity with your dipstick.
- Follow your vehicle's recommended oil change schedule (typically every 3,000–5,000 miles).
If you’re hitting the road for vacation, an oil change beforehand is a smart move.
6. Top Off Fluids
In addition to coolant and oil, check these other essential fluids:
- Brake fluid
- Transmission fluid
- Windshield washer fluid (bugs are everywhere in summer!)
You can check all these fluids by opening up your hood. Clean, full fluids keep your car running smoothly and safely.
7. Check Wipers and Lights
Summer storms and nighttime driving require good visibility.
- Replace worn-out wiper blades.
- Test headlights, brake lights, and turn signals.
- Clean lenses to remove fog or oxidation.

Final Tip: Have a Roadside Emergency Kit
Keep water, a flashlight, jumper cables, basic tools, and a first aid kit in your car. It’s always better to be prepared—especially when you're far from home.
